Sustainable Aviation coalition calls for strong government support to help the industry meet its net zero carbon objective by 2050, citing a clear and credible plan to take carbon dioxide out of aviation through increasing the use of sustainable aviation fuel and hydrogen propulsion.
Sustainable Aviation's latest roadmap outlines that a shift from fossil fuels to SAF will account for some 40% of the CO2 reduction, while another 25% will come from airlines replacing old, inefficient aircraft with new equipment and more direct flight paths made possible by the modernization of air traffic management processes and equipment.
UK Transport Secretary Mark Harper announced £55 million ($68 million) to support efforts to build five SAF manufacturing plants in the country, with the aim of having SAF account for 10% of its fuel mix by 2030. However, there are calls for the UK government to do more, with industry leaders warning that the UK risks missing out on the economic opportunity and falling behind the US if it moves too slowly.
