The Tourism Panel on Climate Change (TPCC) released the "Tourism and Climate Change Stocktake 2023" report, revealing that 8-10% of global emissions stem from the tourism industry. This industry is growing faster than the global economy, especially in high-income countries, with no significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.
The report highlights a surge in air travel, with 47% of international tourists flying in 2019, and an overall increase in travel distance and frequency. Emissions from tourism reached 4.1 to 5.4 gigatonnes in 2019, accounting for up to 11% of global greenhouse gases. The TPCC warns that tourism is not on track to meet the 2030 target of a 50% emission reduction set by the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism.
Urgent actions are needed for a just transition to climate-resilient tourism, with a focus on integrating climate and tourism policies and promoting low-carbon travel options. The TPCC plans to follow up with a detailed Science Assessment in 2024 and aims to demonstrate progress by 2028.
