What is Ecotourism?

Ecotourism is a form of travel that emphasizes respect for nature, culture, and local communities. Despite its growing popularity, with an expected market value of $299 billion by 2026, ecotourism faces challenges such as carbon emissions from flights and ensuring profits benefit local communities and wildlife protection. Professor David Fennell, from Brock University in Ontario, Canada, emphasizes that ecotourism is more about the traveler's attitude and ethics towards conservation and animal welfare. The concept includes 'hard paths' and 'soft paths', based on the level of physical and environmental commitment. While activities like wildlife tourism and nature-based sports can be part of ecotourism, they must be ethical and education-focused, prioritizing the well-being of the environment and local communities. Ecotourism also advocates for sustainable practices, such as employing former loggers as rangers in conservation areas. However, the industry faces issues of greenwashing and exploitation, making it crucial for travelers to choose destinations and activities responsibly, guided by certifications and ethical considerations.
