The effect of SAF on travellers

  • Willie Walsh, director general of the IATA, stated that the adoption of sustainable fuels will account for around 65% of the reduction needed for the airline industry to reach its net-zero emissions target by 2050.

  • However, as the cost of sustainable fuels is many times higher than the standard kerosene, consumers will have to bear the cost through higher airfare prices. The worldwide cost of decarbonizing aviation is estimated to be over $1 trillion by the IATA.

  • A UK industry group, Sustainable Aviation, warns that decarbonization could reduce passenger demand by 14%. The transition to sustainable fuels also brings challenges as there is a lack of agricultural land for growing ingredients, and hydrogen-based fuels are not yet available in sufficient quantities.
